Sectorial Strategies A key area of activity under JITAP is the development of sector strategies for priority product sectors which have been identified after undertaking an analysis of products and markets of relevance to the countries. These sector strategies are formulated within a framework of market analysis, competitiveness measures, and allied policy changes that seeks to build an enabling business environment for the private sector. Parts of the sector strategies designed under JITAP I implemented: In the initial group of countries, follow-up activities for developing sector strategies have been undertaken. In Benin, a national symposium to adapt and endorse the strategy for cashew nuts was organised. As a follow-up, a Market Orientation Tour to Vietnam was organised. A sector strategy formulation exercise was also initiated for cassava and by-products that were identified as a priority sector under JITAP I. Tunisia received specific market analysis tools, such as Market Access Maps and Trade Maps and related training from ITC. Sector strategies initiated in the new JITAP countries: Botswana and Zambia have been equipped with specific market analysis tools to identify their priority sectors for export development. Country teams from Botswana, Senegal and Zambia participated in an ITC workshop on national export strategy development held in Geneva in November 2003, in order to familiarise themselves with the strategy development process and tools. The following table shows the sector strategy developed in the 8 JITAP countries and the sector strategy being developed in the 16 countries.
